In cases where prolonged apnoea follows suxamethonium administration an assessment of atypical cholinesterase can be made using the Dibucaine and Fluoride Numbers. Such assessment should not be made until 24 hours after suxamethonium administration.

Avoid haemolysis.

Note Additional Collection Instructions:

Pathology Queensland prefer to receive BOTH a Lithium Heparin Plasma (no gel or gel) specimen PLUS a 4 mL EDTA whole blood sample. (EDTA specimen must be sent unspun).
