Collection & Request Instructions:

Rapid testing for Influenza A, Influenza B, RSV, and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) is performed on all specimens.

Reflex testing using the extended respiratory virus PCR panel can be performed on samples that are negative for the rapid influenza/RSV test.

An add-on Extended respiratory virus PCR can be requested by ordering this procedure in EMR using the collection priority "Add-on". Please include clinical notes stating why this test is required.

Refer to the Alfred Health guideline "Management of Seasonal Influenza" for instructions to collect nose/throat swabs.

Mouth swabs are not an acceptable specimen.

The following respiratory pathogens are detected with the extended panel: Influenza A/B, Parainfluenza 1,2,3, RSV, Adenovirus, Human Metapneumovirus, Rhinovirus/Enterovirus, Bordetella pertussis and Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
