Examination for mycobacteria are performed only on specific request.

Ascitic, Synovial, Pleural Fluids are often clotted on arrival and only a qualitative count and Gram stain are performed.

Synovial Fluids are routinely examined for crystals.  Mark request slip URGENT.

Add 1-2mL of fluid to a lithium heparin tube to prevent the specimen clotting. Fluids in blood tubes are unsuitable for culture.

Peritoneal Dialysate should be sent in a sterile container for cell count and culture.

Send 40 mL of fluid in a sterile container. Do not send bags.
