Elevated levels of sTFR are noted in patients with iron deficiency, even with concurrent inflammation. They can also be seen in conditions with increased red cell formation/ turnover. Some examples are haemolytic conditions, recent blood loss, erythropoiesis stimulating agents, myelodysplasia or inerited red cell disorders such as G6PD-deficiency or hereditary spherocytosis.
