Registration Instructions: | A placenta received in conjunction with a foetus (>15 weeks) must be referred to Monash Health Perinatal Autopsy Service for examination.

Collection & Request Instructions: | The placenta should be sent for pathological examination in all cases of foetal death, and where possible for all early neonatal deaths. Cultures should be taken from the foetal surface of the placenta in cases of actual or suspected infection.
Wards/Theatre: Place fresh placenta in a biohazard bag labelled with patient's details and then into a pail labelled with the patient's details. Attach the request form to the pail and forward to Anatomical Pathology. |

Anatomical Pathology must make sure the specimen reaches the Alfred CSP sendaway bench before 10:00 am to ensure collection by the routine courier. This is a once a day pick-up. A special courier delivery will be required if a delay of more than 24 hrs is anticipated. |
