Oesophageal, Common Bile Duct , Pancreatic and Ampulla brushings and fluids for Cytology

 

Biliary and pancreatic duct cells degenerate rapidly in bile fluid.

These specimens and those obtained at ERCP procedures should be sent immediately to the Cytology laboratory.  

 

Oesophageal, Bile duct and Ampulla brushings should be fixed immediately, before the smears dry, in Alcoholic fixative (green solution) as supplied by the cytology laboratory. The fixed smears can be transported to Cytology via Pathology central specimen reception.
