Foetal/Perinatal autopsy service

Monash Health provides maternity, newborn and gynaecology services at Alfred Health’s Sandringham Hospital. Perinatal autopsy requests for Sandringham patients are referred to Monash Pathology.

Requests for a Perinatal autopsy require completion of a separate VPAS request form that can be downloaded from the VPAS Website

The Victorian Perinatal Autopsy Service (VPAS) provides a co-ordinated state-wide service ensuring consistent standards of practice and expertise for the clinical investigation of perinatal deaths across Victoria. A perinatal autopsy is examination of a registered birth where the baby shows signs of life at birth, regardless of gestation or does not show signs of life at birth and is at least 20 weeks gestation or weighs at least 400g at birth.

The three Victorian tertiary maternity hospitals providing these services are the Royal Women’s Hospital (the Women’s), Monash Health and Mercy Hospital for Women, and their associated pathology departments, The Royal Children’s Hospital Pathology, Monash Pathology and Austin Pathology.
